As a WordPress webmaster, you need to know how to update WordPress and keep it up to date.
Keeping your WordPress installation up to date is a simple procedure these days. Prior to WordPress 2.7 (released in December 2008) you had to update WordPress manually.
Obviously I’m not talking about getting out the hammer and nails… When I say “manually”, I mean manually uploading all the new files to your web host, which could be particularly time consuming, especially if you had several different sites.
I had about about 50.
So you can imagine my joy when I discovered a plugin called WordPress Automatic Upgrade. With the click of a button, your WordPress installation was upgraded! I remember it like it was yesterday…
Well, these days, you guys have got it good. The one click revolution has been incorporated into the standard WordPress functionality. What does that mean to you? It means WordPress tells you when an update is available, you click a button, and get on with your life. It’s just so simple!
But, I mean, I’m just so over pushing buttons, aren’t you? Surely the days of WordPress updating itself can’t be far away, right?
Then, if they could just work on that whole automatically-writing-blog-posts-for-me thing, that’d be great.
But in the mean time, here’s how to update WordPress.
How To Update WordPress
When a new version of WordPress becomes available, a notification will appear within your Dashboard:

Before proceeding, you are advised to make a back up your WordPress. This is something that should be done regularly anyway. When you are ready, click Please update now to proceed with the upgrade.
On the next page you can choose whether to upgrade automatically or manually.

Click Upgrade Automatically. If everything goes smoothly, your WordPress will be successfully upgraded.

I only recall one instance when WordPress hasn’t automatically updated the first time – the resulting page appeared blank, which probably meant it didn’t load completely. All that was required to rectify this was to hit my browser’s Back button and try again.
